1) abase something or someone 

     : humiliate them, cause to feel shame. -  창피를 주다. 

2) abase another person 

     : make someone feel low - 자신을 낮추다 in 품격, 자존심,지위 

 base는 보통 bottom을 의미한다. 결국 바닥으로 떨어뜨린다는 의미. 

    즉 low의 의미
